Courtesy. Professionalism.

These are broad terms for a person’s actions relating to his official tasks or activities that would leave a mark on his reputation.

This came to mind because of a situation that left a not-so-good initial impression on me by someone in the same field I am in - Human Resources.

When I was fourteen, something short of a commotion happened in my family. An old immigrant petition, twenty years or so in the making finally pushed through. Even before I got the time to exhale, next thing I knew I was packing my bags in a whirlwind flight to California — I left my entire life, to the greener pastures. The first rush was amazing, more breathtaking than any other family vacations we ever took.

I admit, I was happy. Masaya kong iniwanan ang Pinas. Being an outcast at fourteen didn’t really scream happiness, anyways. At that age, i thought that sacrificing everything was worth nothing.

Is it me or traffic enforcers are getting rampant?

No, srsly.. And none of them is working to keep the road free from accident or traffic, they’re after the money in our pockets.

I almost totally forgot.

If it hadn’t been for my friend reminding me yesterday, I wouldn’t have remembered an important event soon.

A few weeks ago, my driver gave a few coins to a beggar along the road we usually take whenever I go to school. The beggar is a very old man who looks like he can barely walk.

For the eyes of someone like me, I pity him. He looks so helpless.

I’ve moved on from my previous employer a few months ago, having decided to try and have a go at being an independent consultant.  Sure, it’s a challenge, but it’s something that I’ve always looked forward to and see the time when I could work for myself.

A week ago, on a day that was particularly slow and uneventful, I was trying to keep myself busy.  I answered a few emails, replied to some inquiries, and had a relatively quiet morning.

Now there wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary in doing that – unless you were me, at this particular stage in my life.  I had been used to working – being an employee in the corporate world – with my own desk, PC and a fixed 8-hour workday, 5 days a week.  For so many years I had been a typical office “slave.”
